The November 6th, 2018 election process promises to be polarizing, critical, controversial, and contentious as the nation wrestles with key issues – and who will be selected to lead us into answers for those key areas of concern.
This election, two Harmony Students – Yusuf Ali Yildirim and Jinaan Ghassan Abdelqader – will have their first opportunity to participate in that electoral process making sure their voices are heard, as they vote their choice for people and proposed legislation for the very first time this November.
Yusuf and Jinaan are members of Mr. Mulvey’s College Transition preparation class, and they completed their registrations to vote with the help and encouragement of Texas Deputy Registrar for voting and local Attorney, Ramona Brumfield, and Elfrieda Cole, also a Texas Deputy Registrar for voting.
Both Ms. Cole and Ms. Brumfield spoke to all the students of the Senior class, encouraging them to register to vote as soon as they were eligible, and to participate in what Lincoln described as “Government of the people, by the people, and for the people.”
You might ask yourself, “Yes it is good for them to exercise their vote, but can just two voters have an impact? Can two votes really count? ”
In 1645, one vote gave Oliver Cromwell control over England.
In 1776, one vote gave America the English language instead of German.
In 1845, one vote brought Texas into the Union.
History would seem to answer you . . . “Yes!”

In 1955, the Daughters of the American Revolution petitioned Congress to set aside One week in September annually to be dedicated for the observance of Constitution Week.
The resolution was later approved by the U.S. Congress and signed into public law on August 2, 1956, by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
The purpose of this annual celebration is to:
• Emphasize citizens’ responsibilities for protecting and defending the Constitution.
• Inform people that the Constitution is the basis for America’s great heritage and the foundation for our way of life.
• Encourage the study of the historical events which led to the framing of the Constitution in September 1787.
